Abstract
Global industrial production and consumption have exceeded the regeneration capacity of natural resources and the capacity of governments to manage pollution and waste. The industrial growth helped lift tens of millions out of poverty in many countries in recent decades, especially in the growing urban areas. It is evident that economic growth and urbanization have not come without a price. This phenomenon is accompanied by inadequate or non-existent urban environmental services. These deficiencies inhibit growth, is an additional stress on natural systems and public health deteriorating the investment climate. International interest on global climate change is increasing. Climate change impacts can be very serious for all countries, especially for countries that are poorly equipped to deal with the effects on agricultural production, productivity and health. Intensification of competition for scarce resources, including water and energy, can not only increase the conflict in industrial context. Environmental degradation and climate change may also intensify already worrying trends such as desertification, rising the sea level, more frequent and severe weather events, freshwater shortages, resulting in the worst case scenarios of civil conflict and cross-border and uncontrolled migration. The efficient use of resources and the economic development with low carbon can reduce the pressures and can help to avoid major causes of deep social conflict. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has recognized the need to be addressed environmental issues and to be promoted cleaner production methodologies at a systemic level in industrial development. Promoting resource efficiency requires vision and decision-making process that takes into account simultaneously the economic value and environmental sustainability. Improved efficiency of resources also applies to energy, which reduces emissions of greenhouse gases from energy production and use, from extraction and processing of materials, transportation and disposal. Sustainable industrial energy strategies, including the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency are therefore essential to tackling climate change by moving economies on a path less carbon dioxide.
