Abstract
The present doctoral thesis was born out of a feeling of attraction and admiration for Joseph Conrad‟s writing technique in his novella, Heart of Darkness. Not only was his style unique and innovative, but the issue that he touched upon has not lost its importance after more than a century, as multiculturalism remains a widely discussed matter. Nevertheless, as attention fell solely upon the cultural aspect, mainly considered was broadening the scope of interest in search of other novelists who discussed the problem of understanding and accepting cultural otherness. However, this attempt entailed questions about the period the research would focus on, whether it would turn to American or English writers, and, of course, which novels would be placed under the lens. As Joseph Conrad‟s Heart of Darkness represented the starting point of this study, it only seemed appropriate to begin by introducing early modernism, the context/aesthetics within which Conradian discourse has shaped its specificities.
